Sony Ericsson Z770

Just over the weekend, Sony Ericsson announced their latest clamshell mobile, the Z770, the main feature being a HSDPA mobile phone with web capability allowing users to stay up-to-date with feeds and favourite websites, as well as email.

Here’s the press release:

Barcelona, Spain ? 10th February 2008 ? Sony Ericsson today announced the launch of the new Z770, an elegant clamshell phone optimised for the web and benefiting from HSDPA data speeds. This classic-looking clamshell phone offers capabilities beyond expectation. It is designed to make it straightforward to surf the web or receive the latest news, and the ?email set-up wizard? makes it simple to access your inbox. The Z770 can also be connected directly to a laptop (via USB cable) and can be used as a modem.

?The Z770 is deceptively powerful for such a compact clamshell phone,? said Martin Winkler, Director Global Marketing and Head of Multimedia Web at Sony Ericsson. ?It appeals to busy people who demand hassle-free email and high quality Web access on the move. These people need to be in-touch, need to be on top of their email, but don?t necessarily want a smartphone or PDA. The Z770 is the uncomplicated answer.?

Z770 phone ? Gets you online with effortless style

* Easy email set-up ? for ultimate convenience
* High-speed web access and intuitive navigation features for fast web browsing
* Google? Maps for Mobile ? receive step-by-step directions on your screen to your destination

Style in your pocket
A compact, reliable phone that helps you juggle work, home, friends and family. With HSDPA technology providing fast data speeds, the Z770 provides multiple methods of communication whether it?s for a business matter or just staying in touch with the family. This phone combines up to 8.5 hours talk time with easy email set-up and fast internet access. This makes the Z770 a versatile phone for those that have a hectic lifestyle both at work and at home with the family.

Your inbox in your hand
The Z770 makes it easier than ever before to access your email. Even if you?re a technical novice you can access Web email (Hotmail, Yahoo etc) and retrieve mail, straight from your phone. And with Exchange ActiveSync?, you can even configure your phone to have work emails pushed straight to your phone, making it easier than ever to stay in touch on the move.

Choose how you want to get online
The Z770 gives you online access, however you choose to get there. Surf the web or retrieve email directly on your phone when you?re in a cab. And when you?re in the hotel lobby, connect the Z770 to your laptop (via USB Cable) and use it as a modem to access the web on your computer.

Once online, web browsing on the Z770 is easy thanks to the Magnetic Mouse Pointer that is controlled by the navigation key. The key changes the icon depending on its position on the Web page (i.e. from text input to pointer or to link). Plus, pan and zoom into an area you?re interested in for easy reading on the good-sized (2.2?) screen.

Stay up-to-date
The Z770 offers you all the information you need, right at your fingertips. Receive RSS feeds from news or entertainment websites as the action happens. Or simply click on the RSS tile, or ?widget?, for instant access to your favourite webpage from your phone?s desktop (or standby screen). In addition, the Z770 has a useful built-in weather forecast application, allowing you to receive regular weather updates and plan your long weekend accordingly.

As well as receiving the latest news and weather forecasts, you can also keep loved ones informed about your own news. Snap a photo on the Z770 and upload it instantly to your own blog site.

Stay in touch in your car
You don?t need to hold the phone in your hand to get the best out of the Z770. With the Bluetooth ? Handsfree HCB-150, also announced today, you can catch-up with your client or family in your car while staying focused on the road. The HCB-150 also features a convenient text to speech feature; the HCB-150 verbally alerts you who is calling. The HCB-150 has a talk time of up to 25 hours and 700 hours standby time- long enough to last for quite a few trips!

The Z770 is a UMTS/HSDPA 2100 and GSM/EDGE 900/1800/1900 phone that will be available in Vogue Red, Graphite Black and Exquisite Gold in selected markets from Q2 2008.

Compare: Smart phones

lets you type quickly and accurately.

Take care of business wherever you are with the latest multi-function phone.

If you're struggling to keep up with a busy lifestyle, a smartphone might help you stay on top of things; because the smart thing about a smartphone is it lets you do a whole lot more than just make phone calls. It can act as your personal assistant, has a built-in calendar, address book and to-do list for keeping your life in order, and you can keep this information synchronised with your computer to ensure important data is always in your pocket.

The advent of high-speed mobile broadband networks means smartphones are handy for checking email and surfing the web. Most also have built-in wi-fi, letting you connect to your network at home or work, as well as hotspots in cafes. Some even have built-in satellite tracking, so you can find nearby attractions and even generate turn-by-turn driving directions.

Bored? Let your smartphone entertain you. Many phones have large, sharp displays that are great for watching videos, listening to music, browsing your photo collection and playing games while riding the bus.

If you want to use your smartphone for work as well as play, check with your IT department to see which phones are supported and whether or not you will be able to access the network at the office. Most smartphones can also act as a modem for your notebook.

Before you can choose a smartphone, however, you must decide how you want to use it. Make a list of your requirements in order of importance: if you will be writing a lot of emails or text messages, then you might benefit from a built-in keyboard; if you'll be regularly surfing the web, consider something compatible with the high-speed HSDPA mobile broadband networks.

A big screen is obviously handy for watching movies. If you want to listen to music then you will want a phone that comes with good software for organising your album collection. And there are lots of different plans available.

Apple's iPhone gets a lot of attention, as will the Google Android phones when they hit our shores this year. We've taken a look at a few of the best smartphones running Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system.

Review: Nokia 6600 Slide

Stylish and easy to read ... Nokia 6600 Slide
Nokia 6600 Slide

Price: free to $500

LOWDOWN: There's so much fuss made over super-new, giant smartphones. But many mere mortals don't know what their features actually do, let alone how to use them. Whilesome techies use phones to run their life and entertain them (oh, and occasionally make phone calls, too), many people still want a normal phone that acts like a phone first and foremost.

LIKE: Well, Nokia's 6600 Slide could be it. Its glossy black case with blue trim looks incredibly stylish, and sliding the top half up to expose the number pad has a luxurious feel about it. The body is very smooth and small and will happily fit into any pocket with you barely knowing it's there: imagine Barack Obama trying to do that with his BlackBerry. The keyboard is fine for calling and texting, while Nokia's S40 interface is straightforward to use and learn. The 5.6-cm screen feels surprisingly large. Our test unit came from the Three network, so as well as functioning principally like a simple phone, it does do other stuff, too. Nokia Maps is integrated and helps you find your way about. There's no GPS built in (you can add one via Bluetooth if you're brave enough), but it's still handy to have. You can browse the internet with the Opera Web Browser and the 3.2-megapixel camera (with its built-in flash) works surprisingly well.

VERDICT: It's free on Three's cheapest caps and ticks all the boxes if you want a small, simple, stylish phone with some nifty features you can play with, too.

Sony Ericsson Does the Wrong Thing With Boomboox Walkman Phone

Sonyericsson_w395_walkman_2

Oh, Sony Ericsson, why? Why have you just made the metro a little bit more miserable, and the streets just a touch more mean? Are you so desperate for cash that you are willing to risk a "Do the Right Thing" style riot just to sell a new phone?

The W395 Walkman phone is aimed squarely at the "youth" market, a fact easily gleaned from the publicity material featuring the phone alongside a skateboard. But the real gimmick, the thing that will attract youngsters like knives and anvils to Wile E Coyote's giant electromagnet, is the set of stereo speakers on the back. The press release doesn't even detail these speakers, instead relying on this visceral description:

Powerful built-in stereo speakers with high quality bass [emphasis added]

There is more in there -- a 12.5 hour battery life when playing music, a 2MP camera with which to capture urban unrest and a supplied 1GB memory card to store the recorded mayhem. But really, it's all about those speakers. In fact, Sony Ericsson should have just called the phone the "Radio Raheem". At least it doesn't need 20 D-Cell batteries to work (NSFW).

Sharp SH0018-megapixel Camera Phone

Sharp SH0018-megapixel Camera Phone: To allow for clearer conversations in busy locations where ambient noise is present, a noise-canceling feature is built-in, along with a “Slow Talk” button that lets users better understand callers by slowing down their speech. A cut function allows users to quickly take text that is over the character limit and transfer it to a new e-mail or text message.

An assisted GPS service is offered, and users can access a music download portal. Other software includes dictionaries and an e-wallet. The integrated 740MB of usable memory is backed up by a microSD card slot, allowing users to add much more storage space. Bluetooth and infrared short-range wireless connections are included, and the SH001 has the ability to pick up 1Seg TV broadcasts.

The clamshell handset’s notable features consist of an 8-megapixel CMOS camera and a dual-hinged design that allows the 3-inch, 480×854 pixel LCD screen to rotate out to face the user while being folded into the handset. The camera has an integrated autofocus and face recognition capability, while its ISO rating can be set as high as 2,500 for capturing images in low-light environments.Available in white, pink or black in Japan later this year, the SH001 is expected to cost the equivalent of $440.

Sony Ericsson Cyber-Shot S001 Mobile Phone

Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot S001 has the 8-megapixel camera still rare for the company but centers on an extremely sharp, 854×480 OLED display with enough color saturation to help previewing photos or watching 1Seg digital TV. The camera itself also has features closer to dedicated cameras with shooting up to the equivalent of ISO 1,600, image stabilization and detection of both faces and smiles.

A new BRAVIA Postcards feature creates TV-friendly photo postcards optimized both for widescreen sets and for more recent Japanese Sony Ericsson phones. The phone comes with a 1GB microSD card for storage and supports both GSM and 3G for use outside of its home country. Sony Ericsson promises a release on KDDI in late March.
