Compare: Smart phones

lets you type quickly and accurately.

Take care of business wherever you are with the latest multi-function phone.

If you're struggling to keep up with a busy lifestyle, a smartphone might help you stay on top of things; because the smart thing about a smartphone is it lets you do a whole lot more than just make phone calls. It can act as your personal assistant, has a built-in calendar, address book and to-do list for keeping your life in order, and you can keep this information synchronised with your computer to ensure important data is always in your pocket.

The advent of high-speed mobile broadband networks means smartphones are handy for checking email and surfing the web. Most also have built-in wi-fi, letting you connect to your network at home or work, as well as hotspots in cafes. Some even have built-in satellite tracking, so you can find nearby attractions and even generate turn-by-turn driving directions.

Bored? Let your smartphone entertain you. Many phones have large, sharp displays that are great for watching videos, listening to music, browsing your photo collection and playing games while riding the bus.

If you want to use your smartphone for work as well as play, check with your IT department to see which phones are supported and whether or not you will be able to access the network at the office. Most smartphones can also act as a modem for your notebook.

Before you can choose a smartphone, however, you must decide how you want to use it. Make a list of your requirements in order of importance: if you will be writing a lot of emails or text messages, then you might benefit from a built-in keyboard; if you'll be regularly surfing the web, consider something compatible with the high-speed HSDPA mobile broadband networks.

A big screen is obviously handy for watching movies. If you want to listen to music then you will want a phone that comes with good software for organising your album collection. And there are lots of different plans available.

Apple's iPhone gets a lot of attention, as will the Google Android phones when they hit our shores this year. We've taken a look at a few of the best smartphones running Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system.
