EA revealed plans for three new Need for Speed games in 2009 each designed differently for various formats and each exhibiting a change in direction for the series.
The first of three called Need for Speed: Shift is headed to the Xbox 360, Playsation 3, PSP, and PC. This game will focus on being a much more realistic simulation racing game that is being developed by new British studio Slightly Mad Studios. While new this studio knows its way around the racing wheel as Ian Bell, co-founder of SimBin, has worked on racing games previously with GT: Legends and GTR.
The second game is Need for Speed: Nitro and is bound for the Nintendo Wii and DS systems. Development is being handled by EA Montreal and the game has been described as having a “unique visual style” but no screenshots have been released.
The final game of the group may be the most surprising as Need for Speed: Online is a free-to-play game headed for the PC. This game is targeted towards the Asian market where free-to-play online gaming is much more pervasive. The game will release in North America in winter 2009.
If that’s not enough Need for Speed for you, EA Games Marketing Executive tells Eurogamer that there is a fourth Need for Speed game currently in development.
“This isn’t about quantity, this is about crafting different games for different audiences and their unique tastes in the driving category,” Munro says.
