Codename Panzers: Cold War

We could stare at the screenshots all day and talk about the luscious backgrounds, the tiny particle effects, and the vehicle design, all of which look incredible. But that’s not what an interview is about now is it? No, we need to go deeper than aesthetics. We need to cut deep into the game’s flesh.

And who better to conduct the surgery than the developer of Codename: Panzers, Stormregion. What did they have to say about this highly anticipated real-time strategy game? There’s only one way to find out.

Codename: Panzers features three campaigns with a combined total of 30 different missions. What else can you tell us about them?

aszx

Stormregion Design Team: These are only numbers. The fun is behind them. :) You will catch the atmosphere of missions really soon after starting the game. It's possible to play the game from a German, Soviet, or Anglo-American point of view. You can follow the story of the heroes of all sides, and command your troops to victory in well-known campaigns and battles like the occupation of Poland and France, Crete, The Winter Campaign against the Soviet Union, Stalingrad, Moscow, The siege of Budapest, D-Day landings, Normandy, Operation Market Garden, Ardennes, and naturally the fall of Berlin...

Talk about the different environments and how the varying terrain will help or hinder the player's success.

Stormregion Design Team: As there are many different locations, you will find diverse landscapes as well. Each requires something different regarding strategy, and each provides different challenges for your war-genius. There are huge cities, snowy fields, mountainous regions, beaches at Normandy, and many more. If you know how to hide your units in forests, or buildings, if you find swallows or use an Inflatable boat to cross the river, you can surprise the enemy using these sophisticated tactics of warfare. You can even lay mines to any place, it's up to you to find the proper locations to destroy as much of the enemy as possible.

“Awesome” doesn’t quite cut it.

Codename: Panzers has a unique system that lets players buy new units or repair existing ones. Talk about it.

Stormregion Design Team: It's worth taking care of your units. They receive experience points depending on their performance, and they can become higher-level elite units. If you lose them on the battlefield, you have to fight your next mission with rookie units, which is a much more difficult task to achieve.

Give us an example of a unique strategy the players must use to complete a difficult mission.

Stormregion Design Team: There are many ways of completing a mission, and we give a wide range of possibilities to the player to complete objectives following his own style of warfare. So there is NO unique strategy which the player MUST use. Play the mission, and if you are clever enough, you can replay it several times, using totally new strategies. And naturally it doesn't means that all of the strategies are successful in all cases :

The vehicles are said to be historically accurate. What are they based on, and how many will be present in the final game?

Stormregion Design Team: We are all fans of WWII, so we spent much time and effort on creating really detailed vehicles and infantry units for the players. We have more than 100 authentic units, based on a huge historical resource work. Their features are based on real specifications, and the units are not the low poly ones that you used to see in different games.

How did the team go about designing the vehicles? How did they ensure that they were true to the real thing?

Stormregion Design Team: We have a collection of authentic photos and specifications for all of the vehicles of WWII, that we chose to include in the game. Our artists did their best to visualize them; you won't be disappointed, I'm sure.

How is sound (music and sound effects) used to enhance the mood and the realism of the game?

Stormregion Design Team: Sound is really important to get the best atmosphere for the game. We have several high-quality authentic sound effects for weapons, destructions, etc. Ambient sounds, the proper voice casting and the epic music also enhances your entertainment.

Is the weather an important part of the game? If so, how will it affect the gameplay or a particular mission?

Stormregion Design Team: The weather has great importance on atmosphere as well. You will meet snowy and muddy fields on the landscape and snowfall and raining effects too.

Demolishing is fun!

Besides the incredibly realistic vehicles and backgrounds that we see in the screenshots, what can players expect from the visuals?

Stormregion Design Team: Nothing else but breathtaking visuals like blasts and destructions, a physically modelled wire system that acts like it does in real life (the wind blows the wires, and if you knock down the pole, the wires will breaking away), motion-captured movements, and stunning cutscenes during the missions.
