Peugeot Ozone

Most of the car concepts I see today tend to adopt a more aerodynamic shape. But in order to provide enough power to make a car go as fast as possible, you need to use some sort of fossil fuel. However, car constructors are trying to provide alternative ways to power your car, as the green house effect leading to global warming has become an important issue. For instance, in a hydrogen-powered car, fuel cells turn hydrogen into electricity, so that they completely do away with the use of fossil fuels. Moreover, these hydrogen-based engines are unbelievably efficient as well as clean and safe. One of the latest “green” cars conceptualized by Peugeot is the Ozone car, not your aerodynamic fast car anymore, but it's a peculiar concept nonetheless.

Gizmodo tells us that this hydrogen powered fuel cell transportation vehicle seems to be addressing kids, rather than adults. The whole barrel-like structure is encased between two giant wheels that are controlled by two separate electric motor powered by fuel cells.

The car comes with only two seats and it can be controlled via a joystick panel in the dashboard. Although it seems awkward at first, the design with a semi transparent glass casing offers a great interior volume and exterior view. In case you want to get in or out of it, all you need is to activate the huge glass doors that slide 360 degrees into the symmetric metal body.

World’s Fastest Electric Car

electric-car

The world’s fastest electric car that can arrive at speeds of 208mph has been exposed. The Ultimate Aero EV formed by Shelby Supercars consumes a twin motor AESP creating an amazing 1,000 HP and 800 lb-ft of torque facilitating it to rocket to 60 mph in a mere 2.5 seconds and arrive at a top speed of 208 mph.

However, not only does the Ultimate Aero EV have a range of 150-200 miles on a single charge, but SSC’s Charge on the RunTM onboard charging system lets for full battery recharges in a bit 10 minutes. SSC’s 3-speed automatic transmission transfers the Ultimate Aero EV’s power to its wheels and attains electronically controlled shift times of .24 s. On the contrary, the present electric sports car flagbearer that is the Tesla Roadster which was currently tested by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear develops 250 horse powers.

Once the Ultimate Aero EV’s batteries are charged it will have a series in between 150 and 200 miles. The manufacturer anticipates rolling out pre-production versions of the vehicle, which contain a three-speed automatic gearbox, by June. The petrol-engine SSC Ultimate Aero TT is presently the quickest production car in the world, with a fastest recorded speed of 257 mph. This speed was supposedly attained during tests on September 13, 2007 in West Richland and established by Guinness World Records on October 9, 2007.

Latest concept: The Chess car…give me a break!!!

We’re always mad about new technology / gadget concepts and that’s why we decided to report about the Chess car even though we didn’t actually like the look of it. The Chess mobile is a concept by Dutch designer Frans Hegge and Thijs van der Zanden.

What’s the idea behind it and why does it look like this? The idea is that driving it will ensure more passenger and driver safer, the cabin / spacewagon-like thingy resting on top of a platform that can move it around in the unfortunate event of a crash, can keep passengers out of the deformation zone (the area of the car that is subjected to most impact). In theory, the passengers would experience a lot less of the force, or at least the cabin wouldn’t be smashed in, so injuries are a lot less likely.

Theoretically great, safe and ‘futuristic looking’, but I wonder how many wouldn’t mind sitting in one of these, may be it’s just me, the look of it doesn’t appeal to me at all, but maybe this is what future cars will look like in 20 - 30 years time!

The Chess car was recently submitted by it’s designers to the 2008 Michelin Challenge Design, feel free to click on the images below for a closer look.

The Electric Car Battery War

The electric car industry "is happening now," says EnerDel's Hendrix Bob Stefko

There is little in its spare Manhattan headquarters to suggest that Ener1 (HEV) could someday be an industrial power. The office of Charles A. Gassenheimer, a former hedge fund manager installed as CEO in August to shake up Ener1's management, has few props. They include a framed photo of Senator Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) visiting the company's Indianapolis factory, a poster from a charity event called Ball of the Wild, and a white metallic device the size of a book.

Ener1's future rests on that device, a prototype of a lithium-ion cell that, Gassenheimer hopes, will power fleets of eco-friendly cars. President Barack Obama has set a target of 1 million electric cars on U.S. roads by 2012. "If we are going to meet that goal," Gassenheimer says, "it will require about $40 billion worth of domestically produced batteries." Most experts agree that lithium ion, which can be used to create batteries that weigh far less and store more power than those in today's hybrids, will be the dominant technology. All Ener1 needs to ramp up is a $480 million loan from Washington.

The big question is whether Ener1 or any other U.S. battery maker will be a major player by the time a mass market develops for electric cars, which could take a decade. The field is already crowded. Other U.S. companies claim to have prototypes that work at least as well as Gassenheimer's. They include A123 Systems, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology spin-off, and Franco-American venture Johnson Controls-Saft, which has snared contracts with Ford Motor (F), BMW, and Mercedes-Benz (DAI). But the Americans face Asian rivals with deeper pockets and far more lithium-ion experience.

ASIA'S DEEP POCKETS

Whoever prevails, some lithium-ion batteries will likely be assembled in America. The bigger stakes are over which companies will control the key technology—the lithium-ion cells stacked inside the batteries and the design of the car power system.

U.S. contenders such as Ener1 and A123 claim superior cell technology for cars. Johnson Controls (JCI), the world's biggest maker of conventional lead-acid car batteries, boasts of its automotive experience and alliance with France's Saft, which makes lithium-ion batteries for aerospace and industry. The Asians are counting on their dominance in lithium-ion devices for computers and appliances and on their ties with the hybrid programs of Toyota (TM) Motor and Honda Motor.

The Asians can also better afford the hundreds of millions of dollars needed to build large, state-of-the-art factories. U.S. investors are unwilling to risk such sums for startups—especially now that the recession and cheap oil have dimmed the future of hybrid cars. After surging this fall, Ener1's stock has fallen by half since mid- December, to around 4.

Should Uncle Sam provide billions in loans and grants to a promising but unproven business? Or should the government wait for the market to sort things out before it backs a U.S. company? The risk is that by then another major industry could go the way of memory chips, digital displays, the first solar panels, and the original lithium-ion batteries used in notebook PCs and cell phones. American scientists, funded by federal dollars, were at the forefront of each of those. Yet the industries—and the high-paying manufacturing jobs that go with them—quickly ended up in Asia. U.S. labor costs and taxes drove many operations abroad, but often industries fled simply because Asian governments, banks, and companies were more willing than Americans to ri

Lee's Don't Miss Deal Of The Week

2008-subaru-tribeca.jpgThis is the first installation of my weekly highlighting of deals and offers that I see as beneficial to you, the consumer. If I see a particularly large amount of cash incentives, a super low lease or finance rate or an incentives trend, I will make note of it here. Today I would like to highlight a deal on a crossover utility vehicle (CUV).

2007_tribeca_500.jpgWhile it may not be at the top of anyone's shopping list, the Subaru Tribeca is certainly worth a second look. The Tribeca offers some unique styling, good road manners, lots of features and amenities, better than average reliability and resale value and a flexible seating arrangement. In addition, and why it makes my list this week, is the fact that there is as much as $4000 dealer cash on MY08 models and $1000 on MY09 vehicles, along with a TMV price that is at or below invoice price. MY08 models also have 0% financing for as long as 63 months. I like the Tribeca, and these offers make it that much more attractive.

One thing to keep in mind that the cash available on the Tribeca is dealer cash, and not customer cash. This means that the dealer can use the cash in any manner they see fit, passing it along to the consumer at their discretion. However, my experience has been that most dealers will indeed pass the cash along to the customer as a way to lower the final selling price.

While most agree that you should buy the vehicle, and not the deal, sometimes the deal can make the vehicle that much more appealing. Tune in next Thursday for another highlighted deal of the week.

Comparison Test: 2010 Honda Insight vs 2009 Toyota Prius

09.comparo.insight-vs-prius.group7.1k.jpg

We can guess what some of you are thinking: "Look at that! Honda went and built a Prius!"

Not necessarily. Honda's Insight hybrid actually came to these shores before the Toyota Prius. It even had the high rear hatch with the vertical peek-a-boo glass panel between the taillights from Day One. That no one remembers this is due to the fact that the original Insight was a weird-looking 2-seater that was impractical for the masses. Honda sold only 18,000 of them worldwide over a 6-year run.

Understandably, Honda wanted its new Insight to have broad-based appeal. They wanted to build a hybrid that didn't harbor any eccentricities. And they wanted to sell some 90,000 of them per year. To do this they had to morph the Insight into a 4-door, 5-passenger machine. The 2010 Honda Insight you see above is the result. But comparisons to the Toyota Prius are inevitable. How would this new Insight measure-up to the current king-of-the-hill? We recently pitted the two against each other to find out.

Final pricing for the 2010 Honda Insight won't be released until we get closer to the April 22, 2009 on-sale date, but an Insight is expected to go for several thousand less than a comparably-equipped 2009 Toyota Prius. In this case, the desire to compare on an equivalent equipment basis means we've matched the top-level 2010 Honda Insight EX Navi against a 2009 Toyota Prius with package #5 -- loaded, but without leather seats.

We put these cars head-to-head at our test track, compared them back-to-back on the road and ran them nose-to-tail through the same 197-mile fuel economy test loop. Then we poked, prodded and evaluated them side-by-side using our 27-point evaluation sheet. And yes, we also factored-in the expected price difference. After crunching all of that data, which of these dedicated hybrids do you suppose came out on top?

Honda Not Offering Special Finance Rates For March

Honda Not Offering Special Finance Rates For January

09AccordEX-L-V6_15.jpgLast week, Honda rolled out their incentive and rebate programs for January. Curiously absent were any special finance programs. Instead, Honda seems to be promoting leases with lease and dealer cash on most models. I am not sure why they have taken this route at the same time most other brands are offering subvented finance rates as low as 0%. However, Honda has always been a brand that "does it their way," and I am sure they have their reasons.

Consumers looking to buy a Honda this month should be aware of this and should not expect any fantastic financing offers like they might be seeing at Toyota, Ford or other manufacturers.

Weekly Top 3: Why I Kind Of Want An SLK55 AMG

slk55 blog resize.jpg

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG is a car I really didn't expect to like. Honestly, I'm still not completely sold on it, for one reason -- it's saddled with a conventional automatic that's simply not up to the task, serving up lame throttle-blip-less downshifts and generally sluggish responses to driver commands. But otherwise, whoo, pig sooey! This car turned out to be a total hoot. Here's three reasons why.

3. Dialed-in handling. Wow. You know, before I drove this thing, I was thinking unpleasant thoughts about the previous-generation SLK. Remember that one? The Crossfire progenitor with the paleolithic recirculating-ball steering? Yeah, well, this one's a little different. Despite its advancing age, the current SLK chassis is stout and capable in any form, and the AMG treatment really puts the SLK55 over the top. Driven at 9/10ths through the canyons, the SLK55 is a blast -- negligible body roll, nimble yet planted feel, precise and pleasantly weighty steering. This is the most fun I've had on twisty roads in an AMG car, and that includes the C63 and the SL63.

2. Chortle-inducing V8. Before I laid into the SLK55's throttle for the first time, I was also thinking unpleasant thoughts about the engine. "It's only 5.4 liters," I muttered to no one in particular. "What is this, a swap-job from an F-150?" The C63 and SL63, of course, are armed with a considerably more robust 6.2-liter V8. But you know what? Turns out 355 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque is just fine for a diminutive roadster. Drop the hammer from rest with traction control off, and burnout-quality wheelspin is yours to cherish; wood it at speed, and the SLK55 charges forward like a short-wheelbase locomotive. The 5.4-liter mill doesn't quite have the 6.2's addictive soundtrack, but this is a wonderfully absurd amount of power for something the size of a Miata.

1. Not that we would...but you could.

60-0 is More Important Than 0-60

Audi R8 stopping in 108 ft from 60 mph -- Photo by James Riswick

We car guys love 0-60 times. We can tell you a BMW 335i does it in 5 seconds or a Nissan GT-R in 3.3 seconds (with launch control and roll-out). When a car comes back from our test track, the first question you'll hear is "what was its 0-60?" I don't recall anyone saying, "hey Mike, what was the Mustang's braking distance?" But you know, maybe we should.

Lee's Deal of the Week - The Miata Is Not A "Chick" Car!

miata snow.jpgWith most of the country experiencing some of the worst weather that winter has to offer, it is not surprising that Mazda has put some incentives on the MX-5 (nee Miata). Snow and ice does not make for convertible weather! So to help melt your heart, through February 2nd, you can get $2000 customer cash on both the soft-top and power retractable hard top 2008 MX-5. Â That, plus some healthy discounts (at least on the soft-top) should make the idea of driving a convertible in January a bit more palatable.

The used market is also a great place to pick up a deal on a Miata this time of year. Â You often find late model Miata's for sale, often with low miles, as owners discover they are not quite as versatile as they had hoped. The cold and snow make owners that much more anxious to sell.

f34_td.jpgI used to own a '99 10th Anniversary Edition Miata, and it was the most fun car to drive that I have ever owned. It even eclipsed the fun I had in my old 12-second '84 Camaro Z/28. However, it didn't make for a very good commuter car, especially having to drive with the top up in 90+ degree Florida summers.

And anyone who says the Miata, I mean MX-5 (it will always be a Miata to me), is a chick car has clearly never driven one. If I had the money and space for a third, fun-car, the Miata would be at the top of the list. For the latest incentives and rebates, click here. You can also click here to see more monthly deals.

Edmunds Test Drive: 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart -- Photo by Scott Jacobs

Anyone with a platelet's worth of enthusiast blood running through their veins knows what a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is. Sporting blistered fenders, hyperactive turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive, the "Evo" has fans as rabid as those of the Jonas Brothers. It's certainly a cool car and a stout rival to Subaru's equally popular STI.

But not everyone can afford the $35,000-plus needed to purchase a street-tamed rally car. For them, Subaru's WRX has been the lone budget buy. Not any longer. The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart makes this a tight, two-horse race -- one so close it arguably comes down to tire selection.

Lee's Deal of the Week - Cadillac CTS

X09CA_CT028.jpg

We here at Edmunds are quite fond of the Cadillac CTS. While our long-term CTS has certainly received its share of complaints, most editors agree that it is not just leaps and bounds better than most Cadillacs in recent memory, but that it also more than holds its own when compared with other vehicles in its class, whether they are from Germany or Japan. But just being a great vehicle does not make for a "deal of the week."

Ford Backs Reliability Claims with $1.2 Billion in Reduced Costs

10FusionSport_19_HR.jpg

When it comes to vehicle reliability, the two brands that probably pop into most consumers' heads are Honda and Toyota. However, the facts illustrate how sometimes perception lags reality. The domestic automakers have been claiming that their reliability is at least on par with their Asian rivals. Ford now has some facts to help back up this claim. Over the last two years, Ford has reduced its warranty repairs costs by $1.2 billion. In addition, their warranty repair rates are 50% lower than they were just five years ago.

Chevrolet Camaro Production Starts on February 16, 2009!

camaro_concept.jpg
According to the latest rumors the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro is going to start being produced on February 16, 2009. You can expect the car to start trickling into showrooms about a month or so after that.

GM originally stated that the Camaro was going to being produced at the end of 2008. Another important date to keep in mind is that the convertible version of the Camaro is going to enter production on December 7, 2009. It will be the perfect Christmas present.

It feels like GM has been showing the concept of the Camaro for so long now, but at least we now know when to expect the Camaro's return.

GM is hoping to sell 100,000 Camaro's per year with the V6 starting in the low $20,000 range.

Can you wait that long considering that the Dodge is already taking orders for the Challenger? Keep in mind that these dates are still far enough away that they could be pushed back even further.
