Time and time again, our dreams of ultimate portable gaming were crushed and debunked last year. Fellow avid gamers were craning their necks online for news of a PSP 2 launch in time for Christmas last year. Alas, Santa did not seem to heed our calls.
This year, we catch whiff once again of a PSP 2 rumor. Is it? Or is it not?
Sources say that a prototype is already in the works. Which means we can cross our fingers for a spanking new gaming device by autumn this year.
Mobile trends are gearing towards interconnectivity. If you’re a fellow geekie, you’ve been following the flow. Wi-Fi was hot last year, all portable devices sport 3G this year. Even netbooks and notebooks boast of their 3G connectivity. So will the new PSP 2 try to crush the iPhone and offer mobile phone service as well? Or will they stick to their role in gaming and stay faithful as the best portable gaming device — nothing more, nothing less?
One thing’s for sure, we here at Geekie cannot fathom a PSP 2 without Wi-Fi. Since emerging trends are also going towards opening app stores, and downloading open source freeware, PSP 2 just might do away with those UMD cartridges as well. Imagine being able to download the games straight to your handheld console — over Wi-Fi OR 3G. This subsequently spells out uber-powerful hard disk space and memory as well.
Of course, these are all geekie speculations. Till then, let’s hope the official announcement is just a season away.
